Quick thoughts on Christmas somewhere new...

So - I have an "official" Christmas letter almost ready to go, just haven't posted it yet.  But I wanted to post a couple quick thoughts about experiencing Christmas somewhere very different from the world we've always known.

Things that are different:
  1. It is not cold here for Christmas - never really thought about how annoying all the songs about snow, reindeer and cold are for people living in warm climates (which is really way more of the world than I've ever thought about before).
  2. People on vacation don't care that it's Christmas - and when you work in the "tourism industry" that means there is a lot of work to be done.
  3. I've never been to a Christmas Eve service where a bat flies around displaced by our late night service in his "house" - he did not seem to appreciate our singing.
  4. My kids didn't seem to miss all the usual "stuff" that I buy too much over in the weeks approaching Christmas.
  5. In Costa Rica, Christmas doesn't smell like pine trees, it smells like something called "melaza"- or molasses, which they put down on the gravel roads to control the dust - it's made of the waste from sugar cane factories...mmmm...burnt gross sugar...
  6. Christmas trees are made from juniper bushes - if only I had thought of that in Willow Creek - oh the money I could've made!  :)
Things that are the same:
  1. Surf lessons on Christmas day and the week following are very similar to skiing during Christmas holidays - note to self, get out of the way or you will be trampled/knocked over.
  2. Kids get up early for Christmas no matter where you live.
  3. Christmas cookies are good in all countries.
  4. People are nicer on Christmas (some of the times...see #2 above for exceptions)
  5. Jesus was born and that is why I celebrate no matter where I live.
  6. Christ - mas (more Christ in Spanish)...I like that
  7. And last of all - what my kids really want for Christmas is a day where we are together, playing, surfing/skiing, etc. but just together - an easy thing to forget, but a huge thing to remember.
We love you all and miss you guys a lot!  Enjoy the snow (if you live somewhere cold...) for us - we love you guys!

Thanks,
Carolyn
